Anti-Japanese paranoia increased because of a large Japanese presence on the West Coast. Many Americans worried that citizens of Japanese ancestry would act as spies or *saboteurs for the Japanese government. Americans were worried after the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, bringing the U.S. into the Second World War. As a result, over 127,000 Japanese-American citizens were imprisoned during World War II
